Dussehra is a celebration where the Shami tree is associated with a legend. During this day, the goddess Chamundeshwari is worshipped by people. In Northern India, it commemorates the victory of Rama who is the prince of Ayodhya and avatara of Vishnu, over Ravana who is the lord of Lanka who had abducted Sita Devi who happened to be the wife of Rama.

During the day, many fire crackers are burnt and big melas or fetes are organized and prepared. A dramatization of the Ramayana which is called the Ramlila is done with much public favor in the place. There is also a burning of the effigies of Ravana which symbolizes the victory of good over evil and it also brings the celebration to a very colorful and vibrant close.
