Known as the fourth biggest city in Azerbaijan, Mingachevir is hailed as the city of lights due to its hydroelectric power station on the Kur River.
The current city was founded in 1948. Mingachevir serves as a home to Mingachevir Polytechnic Institute. It was in 1952 when the construction of the Mingachevir reservoir and also the hydroelectric power station was completed. There are numerous people from all districts in the country who come to the city because of the construction of these stations. It is among the central towns of the republic in terms of energy, industry, science, education as well as with culture.
One can visit the city’s Historical Museum which was established in January 1968. It has two branches namely the Martyr’s Memorial and Independence Museum. There are also eight clubhouses in Mingachevir where tourists can enjoy their afternoon. For those who love music, the city has three musical schools which all lasted for seven years already.
