Known as a kingdom in the southwest of the Korean Peninsula, Baekje is among the three Kingdoms of Korea and it claimed to be a successor state to Buyeo. It was founded by Onjo—son of Goguryeo’s founder Jumong, at Wirye-sung around present-day Seoul.
It became a sea power and had continued mutual goodwill relationships with the Japanese rulers of the Yamato period which transmit the cultural influences to Japan. The province was established by immigrants from Goguryeo who spoke what could be a Boyeo language. It was then briefly revived in the Later Three Kingdoms of Korea period as a Unified Silla collapsed.
It was in the year 663 when Baekje revival forces and Japanese naval fleet convened in the southern part of the province to confront the Silla forces in the Battle of Baekgang. Just after five naval confrontations which took place in August 663 at Baekgang the Silla-Tang forces were said to have emerged victorious.
