It is situated on the west coast of the island and is adjacent to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte- the administrative capital of the country.

The city is described as a busy and vibrant city that has a mixture of modern life and colonial ruins. It has a total population of over 600,000 people. Its name was derived from the classical Sinhalese name Kolon thota which means “port on the river Kelani.” Colombo is well known to the ancient traders because of its large natural harbor as well as its strategic location along the east-west sea trade routes.

It was in the year 1978 when administrative functions were then moved to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and the city was designated as the commercial capital of the country. There are numerous corporate offices, restaurants and entertainment venues found in the main city.
