Colombo is not only well known as the largest city in Sri Lanka but it is also the commercial capital of the country.

Colombo is situated on the west coast of the island and it is also adjacent to o Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte which is known to be the administrative capital of the country. The city is characterized as a busy and vibrant city which has a mixture of modern life and colonial ruins. It has a total population of about 600,000 people. Its name was derived from the classical Sinhalese name Kolon Thota which means “port on the river Kelani.â€
It was known to ancient traders since more than 2,000 years ago for its large natural harbor and also because of its strategic location. It was only in the year 1978 when Colombo was designated as the commercial capital of the country. The center of the city serves as the hoem to a majority of the country’s corporate offices, restaurants and also entertainment venues.
