Derived from the Latin anima, Animism is a belief in souls. It is a kind of belief common in India that souls inhabit all or almost all objects and it attributes personalized souls to animals, vegetables and animals. It is where the material object is in some degree being governed by the qualities that make up its particular soul.

Some religions which are animistic are more in restrictive sense generally do not accept a distinction between the spirit and the object. They also assume that the unification of the matter and the spirit has a part in the daily life. It is in this belief where the human being is considered equal footing with animals, plants and natural forces. People are then regarded as denizen or part of nature rather than superior to or separate from it.

Animism is practiced in the eastern parts of the Indian subcontinent as well as in the regions of Southeast Asia.
