Known as the regional center of the Caraga region in the Philippines, Butuan is situated at the northeastern part of Agusan Valley in northern Mindanao.

Butuan City

Its name originated from the sour fruit “Batuan” while others believe that it came from certain “Datu Buntuan” who was a chieftain who once ruled over Butuan. Its land use is made up of agriculture areas, forestland, grass, shrub, pasture land and other uses. It is also endowed with swamplands which are near its coastal area. The swamps are interconnected with the waterways that are joined by the Agusan River.

People in Butuan celebrate Kahimunan Festival held every third Sunday of January which honors the patron saint of the city, Sr. Sto. Niño. In Cebu, the festival is called Sinulog. The term Kahimunan is a Lumad word which simply means gathering. There is also the Abayan Festival which is a part of the cultural festival which celebrates the feast of St. Anne who is the patroness of Agusan River.
