Welcome to Pulau Ubin, a small island located in the northeast of Singapore. It is among the very few off-shore islands in the country which is lightly inhabited. Its name means “Granite Island” that explains the numerous abandoned granite quarries found in the island.Pulau Ubin

The island was formerly known as chioh sua in Hokkien which simply stands for “stone hill.” It was in 1828 when the island first appeared on map and since the British founding of the country, Pulau Ubin then become known for its granite. The granite outcrops has become a beauty to the island for their grooves and fluted sides had created furrows and ridges on each granite rock lump.

The island is well known to be among the last areas in the country which has been preserved from the urban development, concrete buildings and tarmac roads. Its wooden house villages and wooden jetties, relaxed inhabitants, rich and preserved wildlife, abandoned quarries, and its untouched nature makes Pulau Ubin the last witness of the old “kampong” Singapore that existed before the so-called industrial times and large scale urban development.
