Echmiadzin or Ejmiatsin is the headquarters of the katolikos, the head of Armenian Apostolic Church.
It is situated in the amavir province which is about 20 kilometers west from Yerevan. In history, the focal point of the town is the Echmiadzin Cathedral which was originally built by Saint Gregory the Illuminator as a vaulted basilica in 301-303. He was the one who gave the name of the town and the church Echmiadzin which means “the place where the Only Begotten descended.â€
The town has two highly important and very ancient churches. These churches are the church of St. Gayane which is distinguished by its harmonious proportions and was constructed in 639 and the other church is the church of St. Hripsime which was built in 618. These churches are among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. So, why don’t take a glimpse of the place and might as well strengthen your faith with the source of all these graces.
