The Chinese marriage may be a ceremonial ritual which involves a marriage established by pre-arrangement between families and it can also be a ceremony of establishing romantic love.
In the early times, Chinese do not believe in marriages but they have sexual relationships. They were thought to live just like other animals and they also do not have an idea of motherhood, fatherhood, sibling, husband, wife and gender. Later on, the Confucian beliefs established a civilizing mission which eventually led to fatherhood and respect on proper relationships.
There are six rituals followed by the Chinese people in marriages. These are the three letters and six etiquette. The three letters are the request letter sent from the groom’s family to the family of the bride, the gift letter which accompanies the gifts of the groom to the bride’s family and the wedding letter which shows acceptance of the bride to the family of the groom. The six etiquette are the proposal, birthdates, bride price, wedding gifts, arranging the wedding, and the wedding ceremony.
