A large elongated island, Sakhalin is found in the North Pacific and it is the largest island in Russia. Its name simply means “God of mouth of water land” and this name was restored to the island by the Japanese in their possession of its southern part.

The island was said to be inhabited during the Neolithic Stone SakhalinAge. It was in the year 1679 when a Japanese settlement in the southern end of the island was established as a colonization attempt. Russia and Japan had signed the Treaty of Shimoda which declared that both could inhabit the island where the Russians can occupy the north and the Japanese in the south in 1855.

The island is covered with dense forests which are mostly coniferous. Among the species which can be seen in Sakhalin are bears, foxes, otters and stables. There are also lots of fishes in the rivers which include the endangered Western Pacific gray whale.
