A vast elevated plateau in East Asia, Tibetan Plateaus is also called as Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. It covers most of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Qinghai Province in China and Ladakh in Kashmir.
It is popularly known as the “roof of the world” for it serves as the highest as well as the biggest plateau in the whole world. The Tibetan Plateaus has a total area of 2.5 million square kilometers and it has an average elevation of over 4,500 meters. It is surrounded by towering mountain ranges and it is bordered to the northwest by Kunlun Range- separates the plateau from the Tarim Basin and to the northeast by Qilian Range. The plateau is a high-altitude arid steppe which is interspersed with mountain ranges and big brackish lakes.
It was formed by the collision of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates which is near the beginning of the Cezonic era.
