Inhabited by Russians and ethnic Azeri, Turkmenbasy is a city in Turkmenistan which has an estimated population of 51,000. It is part of the Balkan Province on the Krasnovodsk Gulf of the Caspian Sea.
It was in the year 1717 when Russian Prince Alexander Bekovich-Cherkassky had landed and was able to establish a secret fortified settlement in the city. The city was renamed by the President Saparmurat Niyazov in the year 1993 just after his self-proclaimed title Turkmenbasy which means Leader of all Turkmen.
The city is the only port and sea link to Europe of the Central Asia. The country’s largest oil refinery is found also in Turkmenbassy. Among the beautiful sites that you can visit in the place is the Musuem of Regional History, Gate to former Krasnovodsk fort, beaches, Khazar Turkmenbashi State Nature Reserve and the Natural History Museum. Turkmenbasy is connected to Ashbagat by Turkmenistan Airline and also by trains and buses.
