Umm QaisSituated on the site of the ruined Hellenistic-Roman city of Gadara, Umm Qais was also known as Antiochia or Antiochia Semiramis and Seleucia. Gadara is said to be among the Ten Cities of the Decapolis.

Umm Qais served as the answers to the descriptions given by Gadara by ancient writers. It was then a strong fortress which is near the Hieromax, east of Tiberias and Scythopolis. There is a narrow ridge in it where the ruins lay runs out toward Jordan from the very uplands of Gilead. There are hot springs in the area found at the bottom of the valley to the north.

The ridge then sinks to the East and falls steep on the other three sides. The ancient walls found in the area are traced in almost their whole circuit of 3 kilometers. The ruins there include two theaters, basilica, a temple and many other significant structures.
