An island found in the entrance of the Manila Bay, Philippines, Corregidor is shaped like a tadpole. It also partially blocks the entrance to the Manila Bay and it has a very strategic importance.
It is also known as The Rock for it has rocky landscape and it also has fortifications of Fort Mills. In the middle part of the island there is a small plateau which interrupts the upward slope from the bottom part to the top portion. Corregidor’s middle part became the location of barracks for the enlisted men, a hospital, quarters for non-commissioned officers, service club and two school houses.
The island was used as Allied headquarters by General Douglas McArthur during the Battle of the Philippines. It was on December 24, 1941 when Corregidor served as the temporary location of the Government of the Commonwealth of the Philippines. Corregidor now is under the jurisdiction of the province of Cavite and is one of the magnificent and historical attractions in the country.
