Once surrounded by a layer of ignimbrite rocks, Lake Toba is found in the middle of the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Catch the exotic beauty of the lake and enjoy the different views around the place.
The eruption of Toba was the latest of a series of at least three caldera-forming eruptions that have taken place in the volcano. The early calderas were produced around 700,000 and 840,000 years ago and the succeeding collapse created a caldera which eventually produced Lake Toba just as water filled the caldera. A resurgent dome created the island found in the center of the lake.
The magnificent lake is lying near a fault line that runs along the center of Sumatra which is called the Sumatra Fracture Zone. The people living around the lake are Bataks and their houses are notable for their distinctive roofs that curve upward at every end and also their vibrant décor.
