Known as the capital of the Republic of Maldives, Malé is situated at the southern edge of North Male’ Atoll Kaafu Atoll. It was formerly called the King’s Island where the ancient Maldive Royal dynasties had ruled and also the location of the Palace.

Malé serves as the heart of all commercial activities in the country. It is highly urbanized and one third of the country’s population inhabits the capital city. Malé is divided into four divisions namely Henveiru, Galolhu, Maanfannu and Macchangolhi. Its name was derived from the word “Mahaalay†where maha stands for “big†or “great†and aalay which means house.
It was the Dravidian people who first inhabited the Maldive Islands. Then the people of Giraavu- an island situated in Male’ Atoll, had claimed to descend from the first settlers. There is a palace built and the island was then formally called Maa-le (Male’) and the nearest island was then called Hulhu-le.
