Welcome to Mary, an oasis in the Karakum Desert which is situated on the Murghab River. It is a city of Turkmenistan and is the capital of Mary Province.
Mary is said to be the original home of the Aryans. It was in 1884 when the modern city was founded being a Russian military and administrative center and it was then developed by the well known Soviet Union simply as a center for cotton production. In the year 1968, there are numerous reserves of natural gas that were discovered just 20 kilometers west from the town. It is the fourth largest city in Turkmenistan and it has a big industrial center for natural gas and also cotton industries. The city also serves as a trading center for cotton, cereals, hides and wool.
