It is known as the Japanese coming-of-age ceremony, Seijin Shiki is held annually during the second Monday in January and a lot of Japanese people do celebrate it in different ways. Its festivities include ceremonies which are held at the local and prefecture offices and there are also parties celebrated by families and friends to mark the passage into adulthood.
It was in the year 1948 when the festival was celebrated as a national holiday just as when the coming-of-age was set to January 15. In the year 1999, seijin shiki was moved to the second Monday of January due to the Happy Monday System. In janpan, the age of majority is 20 and the celebration covers all those who will reach this age in the current school year. During this day, government officials give speeches and there are also small presents handed out to the new adults.
The Japanese women wear their kimono with furisode to celebrate the festivity. The men on the other hand wear their traditional dress which is a dark kimono with hakama but most men now wear business suits instead.
