Ko Samui

Hailed as the third largest island in Thailand, Ko Samui is an island off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus in the country. It was inhabited about 15 centuries ago whi was settled by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula and Southern China. It currently has a total population of about 45,000 and is living on a successful tourist industry.

Ko Samui is situated in the Gulf of Thailand which is about 35 kilometers northeast of Surat Thani town. The island is surrounded by six other islands where most of which made up the Ang Thong National Marine Park. It is circular in shape and it is about 15 kilometers across. Its old capital, Nathon, serves as the seat of the regional government and is the authentic commercial hub of the Samui locals. Ko Samui’s economy depends on subsistence agriculture and fishing. Their main cash crop is coconut. There are also wonderful beaches to visit in the island making it a famous tourist destination.
