A city in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan, Kyoto has a total population of about 1.5 million. It formerly serves as the imperial capital of Japan and it is the capital of Kyoto Prefecture.
It sits atop a big natural water table which provides the city with ample freshwater wells. Kyoto’s economy depends on tourism and the cultural heritages of the city are often visited by school groups from Japan and other foreign schools and tourists. Its industry is composed of small plants that are run by artisans who can produce traditional Japanese crafts. Kyoto is also remains as the premier center of kimono manufacturing.
The city is said to be one of the academic center of Japan for it serves as a home to 37 institutions of higher education. Wacoal, which happens to be an apparel giant, operates in the city. It became a city designated by government ordinance on September 1, 1956.
