Lankaran is found on the coast of the Caspian Sea which is near the southern border with Iran. It has a total population of 48,400 and half of it is Talysh.

The city’s name is derived from the Talish words Lan Karan which means Cane House. Lankaran was built on a swampy area along the northern bank of the rover bearing the city’s name. It also became the capital of the Talysh Khanate which was able to enjoy variable degrees of independence throughout the city’s history. Lankaran produces spring and winter vegetables and the people also produce rice, grapes, tobacco, citrus trees and oak woods that all thrive in the warm climate.
Lankaran has a historic museum which was built on the site of the Khans palace. There is also the main mosque of the city which is situated near the bazaar. Lankaran also has numerous tanks which are often visited by tourists. The city has also pristine beaches which are sandy and pleasant.
