An island of Indonesia and the site of Jakarta, Java was said to be once the center of powerful Hindu kingdoms as well as the core of the colonial Dutch East Indies. The island now plays a dominant role in the economic and also in the political life of Indonesia. It is also the most populoJavaus island in the whole world.

Java is regarded as the 13th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island of the country. People who inhabit the island have a diverse mixture of religious beliefs and cultures. The island is famous for several important finds of early hominid specimens. Just after the Indonesian independence in the year 1945, Jakarta remained as the capital city of the country and the island has then grown itself into the most crowded area in the country.

It is almost entirely of volcanic origin where it contains no fewer than 38 mountains forming an east-west spine that have at one time or another been active volcanoes. Among the famous tourist destinations in Java are: the city of Yogyakarta, the huge Buddhist stupa complex of Borobudur, the Hindu temples at Prambanan and the Mount Bromo in East Java.
