A beautiful town in Mongolia situated 290 kilometers east of Ulan Bator, Ondorkhaan is the capital of the Khentii Aimag.

It is the most populous part of the Khentii province and it shares location with the Kherlen sum. It is said to be the second oldest city in the country and it borders the Kherlen River and is situated on a broad flat unprotected plain. During winter as the river freezes over and winds howl across the step, their temperature reaches -40ËšC and it has no wind chill factor.

The city’s economy depends on coal mining and a coalfield is situated in the Moron River Valley which is 50 miles from the city. There is also a major United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Networking and Cluster Development project in the town which specializes in strengthening urban, peri-urban and rural business associations and networks that would help in reducing high unemployment rates in Ondorhaan.
