
Popularly hailed as the 11th longest rover in the world, Mekong River has an estimated length of 4,880 kilometers and it drains an area of about 810,000 square kilometers. It runs through China’s Yunnan province from the Tibetan Plateau to Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Its name simply means “Mother of all rivers” and was from the word Mae Khong. There are about 90 million people who rely on the river and these people mostly live in Greater Mekong Subregion which makes up Yunnan Province in China, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Their main livelihood in rice production and there are numerous rice varieties which are grown along Mekong.
Mekong River divided Laos and Thailand before a stretch which passes through Laos alone. It also serves as the home of the giant fish called as the Giant Mekong Catfish. One of the most controversial current issues on the conservation of the river is the building of the dams.
