Simply considered as the largest island of Japan, Honshu is also called the Mainland. It is also the seventh largest island and the second most populous insland in the whole world. It is about 1,300 kilometers long and it ranges from 50 to 230 kilometers wide.

Being a mountainous and volcanic area, Honshu has frequent earthquakes and the highest peak of the island is the active volcano Mount Fuji which is about 3,776 meters high. The island has a temperate climate yet has marked difference between the eastern or southe
rn part, and the western or northern side. Honshu has a total population of 98,352,000
which
are mostly concentrated in the available lowlands. Majority of the country’s industry is situate
d along the belt running from Tokyo along Honshu’s coastal cities.
Their economy is mainly based
on fishing and agriculture. The major fruit-growing area of the island is found in Yamanashi while Aomori is well known for its crispy apples.
