Omiai is what we call an arranged marriage and it is known among the samurai class as means to strengthen alliances. Arranged marriages are often initiated by parents who think that their son or daughter is at marrying age already but the son or daughter but is not seeking a partner. Sometimes the son or daughter will ask friends to introduce some potential partners.

Parents also result to go to professional matchmakers who can give them pictures and resumes of mates who are well-educated and rich. The Japanese arranged marriage are often done in expensive tea shops or hotels and the people who are part of the ceremony are all dressed in formal attire.
