Celebrated in the south Indian state of Kerala, Onam is a famous festivity among the cultural repertoire of Malayalees which is celebrated every August-September.
It is traditionally celebrated as a harvest festival and it is linked to Malayalee-Hindu folktales. Onam is among the most beautiful and meaningful festivals all over the world. It is said to be the harbinger of spring which signals the start of the harvest season. Onam is a ten-day celebration which starts with the Atham day. The earthen mounds which look like square pyramids that represent Mahabali and Vishnu are accessorized with flowers which are called Onapookkalam.
During this festivity, people place flower mats in front of their houses to welcome King Mahabali. There is competition for the laying of flower mats. People are in their new dresses and they visit almost all temples which they can and they are expected to perform numerous dances just like Thiruvathira kali.
