Gateway of India

Ever been to the most popular monument of Mumbai? If not, then welcome to the Gateway of India.

It is situated on the waterfront and is the starting point for most of the tourists and visitors who intend to explore the city. The beautiful monument was made to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the place. The Gateway of India also has a historical significance when the last British troops who sail for England left through the Gateway. It is currently the finest example of colonial architectural heritage in the country of India.

The Gateway is about 26 meters high and is made of yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. The monument is said to have four turrets which is decorated with delicate lattice work beautifully carved into the yellow basalt stone. It was designed by George Wittet and the foundations were done in the year 1920.
