Hasbani, Banias, Dan and Iyon are the known tributaries of the river. Jordan River drops rapidly in a 75 kilometer run to swampy Lake Hula—slightly below sea level in Galilee Sea. The waters in the river are extremely significant resource to the dry lands of the area and are the bone of contention between Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Palestinians.

Jordan in the Bible is considered as the source of fertility to a large plain. It is also remarked as the line of demarcation between the two tribes and the half tribe settled to the east and the nine tribes and the half tribe of Manasseh.
