Known as the capital of the new Mongolian People’s Republic in the year 1924, Ulan Bator was generally known as Urga. It is situated at about 1,350 meters above sea level which is slightly east of the center of the country on the Tuul River.
It is the coldest national capital on the whole word and it has average annual temperature. The city is divided into nine districts and each district is subdivided into Khoroos. Ulan Bator is governed by a city council with 40 members who are elected every four years. It has five major universities and there are also many private and public colleges in the city. Ulan Bator is made up of a central district made in Soviet 1940s and 1950s-style architecture which is surrounded by residential concrete tower blocks and also larger quarters.
Natural History Museum, National Museum of Mongolian History, Gandantegchinlen Khiid Monastery, Bogd Khan’s Winter Palace, Ulaanbaatar Opera House, Zaisan Memorial, Sukhbaatar Square and Gorkhi-Terelj National Park are among the sites which tourists can visit in the city.
