Known as one of the three kingdoms of Korea, Silla started as chiefdom in the Samhan confederacies and has conquered Baekja and Goguryeo in the year 668. Its name was widely known throughout Southeast Asia being the ethnonym for the ancestors of the medieval and also the modern Korean nation.

It is also referred to as Gyerim which literally means “chicken forest” that has its origins in the forest near the Silla capital where the legend says that state’s founder was hatched from an egg. The province was then ruled by three clans namely, the Bak, Seok and the Kim. Its capital was Gyeongju and lots of Silla tombs can still be found today in the center of Gyeongju.
Silla is said to have a strong Buddhist nature and is then reflected by the thousands of the remnant Buddhist stone figures and wonderful carvings which are mostly found in Namsam.
