Welcome to Ligao City, a fourth class city found in the province of Albay, Philippines. Its name is derived from the local word “ticau” which is said to be an abundant tree whose poisonous leaves were used to catch fish on rivers and creeks.

Some of the people there believe that its name was originally “licau” which simply means to take the long way around or to turn away from the ordinary route. It began as a small settlement which was known as Cavasi during the 16th century and it eventually grew in population as it attracted native from nearby settlements. Ligao was founded as a barrio of Polangui in the year 1606 being ceded to Oas in the year 1665 and it then finally became an independent municipality by the year 1666. It is now currently ruled by the fearless person who is known as Gute Sanches.
The city is politically divided into 55 barangays and some of them are the Abella, Allang, Amtic, Bacong. Bagumbayan, Balanac, Baligang, Barayong, Basag, Batang, Bay, Binanowan, Binatagan and many other barangays.
