A rayon of Azerbaijan, Kalbajar was predominantly inhabited by Kurdish people. Its name came from a Kurdish name which simply means Stone City.
Kalbajar is currently under the control of Armenian separatists which came from Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian forces had expelled the Azeri and Kurdish population in the city and they currently live in internally displaced persons in the other regions of the country. The UN Security Council had passed a resolution stating that “immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces from the Kelbajar district and other recently occupied areas of Azerbaijan.â€
There are numerous tourist and historic places in the city. Among these is the Lok Tower in the Ganlykend village, Ulukhan tower in the Garachanly village, Garaboynu tower in the Garaboynu village, Djomerd tower in Djomerd village, Keshikchi tower in Djamyshly village, Taghlydash bridge on the Ter-ter river of Soyugbulaq village, historical and ethnographic museum of Kelbajar and the Dervish house of Seid Asadullah in the Soyudlu plateau.
