Sulawesi is simply regarded as one of the four larger Sunda Islands of Indonesia and it is located between Borneo and the Maluku Islands. It is the 11th largest island in the world and has a total area of 174,600 square kilometers. The island is surrounded by Borneo to the west, by the Philippines to the north, Maluku to the east and Flores and Timor to the south.
Sulawesi Island has a distinctive shape which is dominated by four big peninsulas namely: the Semenanjung Minahassa, the East Peninsula, the South Peninsula and the South-east peninsula. Its central part is ruggedly mountainous where the island’s peninsulas have traditionally been remote from each other. Makassar and Manado are considered to be the largest cities which can be found in the island.
There are about 127 known mammalian species in the island and a big percentage of these mammals (62%) are endemic. The dwarf buffalo or locally known as the anoa is said to be the largest native mammal in Sulawesi Island.
