The Hiligaynon Language

The Hiligaynon or Ilonggo language is among the major languages in the Philippines. The language is often spoken in the provinces of Panay Island like Capiz, Antique, Aklan, Guimaras and in some parts in Mindanao such as the Koronadal City, South Cotabato and in Sultan Kudarat.Hiligaynon

            Hiligaynon is said to be a member of the Visayan language family and there are about 7,000 people in and outside the country who are Hiligaynon speakers. The core alphabet of the language is made up 20 letters which are used in expressing consonants and vowels. The Hiligaynon speakers have three types of case markers which are the absolutive, ergative and the oblique.

            These various types are divided into personal, interpersonal and into singular and plural types. They also have the articles sing and sing mga which means the following noun is indefinite. The article sang on the other hand, pertains to a definite noun. An example of their sentence with these article goes like, “Ang lalaki nagkaon sang tinapay.” This means that “the man ate the bread.”
