Welcome to the Gobi desert, simply known as a large desert region in China and also in southern Mongolia. Its name means gravel-covered plain and the desert basins of the desert are bounded by the Altay Mountains and the grasslands and steppes of Mongolia on the north.
It is made up of several distinct ecological and geographic regions which are based on variations in climate and topography. Gobi desert is said to be notable in the history as part of the great Mongol Empire and it is also the location of several significant cities along the Silk Road. It is a rain shadow desert which is formed by the Himalaya range which blocks rain-carrying clouds from reaching the desert.
It is a cold desert and it is also not uncommon to see frost as well as occasional snow on its dunes. The desert is known to be the source of numerous important fossil finds which include the first dinosaur eggs.
