Welcome to Kotte, the administrative capital of Sri Lanka. It is situated beyond the eastern suburbs of the commercial capital Colombo and it is often known as the New Capital territory. Kotte was derived from the Tamil word Kottei which means fortress. It was in the year 1979 when the city was redeveloped as well as its suburbs as the administrative capital of the island. The city’s former name was Sri-Jaya-Vardhana-Pura-Kotte which simply means “the blessed fortress city of growing victory.” It is a multi-ethnic, multi-religion city which has Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, Indian and Malay origins inhabitants. The major railway found in the city is the Nugegoda on the Kelani Valley Line. It also serves as the city’s main bus terminal. There are also subsidiary bus stands at Pita Kotte and also Welikada. Kotte is well served by buses and there is also the CTB bus depot found at Udahamulla. These means of transportation is really helpful to tourists and visitors who would want to roam the city.
