A port city on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee is built on a peninsula that divided the inner and outer harbors.
Its name is derived from Tamil name Tiru-kona-malai which means “Sacred hill of the Lord.” It has a bay which is landlocked and its harbor is known for its large size as well as its security. Trincomalee has beaches which are appropriate for surfing, scuba diving and fishing while they are also whale watching. It has the largest Dutch fortress in the country and it also serves as the home to Sri Lankan naval base and Sri Lankan Air Force base.
There are about seven hot springs in Trincomalee where its use for bathing is controlled by the neighboring Mari Amman Kovil who handles the lease of the wells. These wonderful springs are on state land. There are also museums found in the city which are helpful to those who would want to know the history and the whereabouts of the people in Trincomalee.
