Tanabata is a famous Japanese star festival which means “Evening of the seventh” and it is taken from Obon traditions and the Chinese star festival which is known as Qi Xi.
It is celebrated on July 7 and people celebrated the meeting of Orihime and Hikoboshi. Tanabata celebration varies from region to region and most of the festivities involve decoration competitions. During this time a lot of activities are done by the Japanese. There are a lot of outdoor stalls which sell food, carnival games and recreations.
In this festivity, Japanese people make use of different kinds of decorations which represent varied meanings. Among these are the paper strips which wishes for good handwriting and studies, paper kimono- wishes for good sewing, paper crane for family safety, health and long life, purse for good business, net for good fishing and harvest, trash bag for cleanliness and streamers where the strings symbolize weaving.
