Bacolod City serves as the capital and is the largest highly urbanized city in the Philippines found in Negros Occidental. It is well known for its Masskara Festival which is held every October. Bacolod is called the City of Smiles because of its charming and friendly people.
Its name is derived from the Hiligaynon word “bakolod†which means stonehill where the settlement was found on a stonehill area in 1770. The city was made the capital of Negros in the year 1894. During the Word War II, the city was occupied by the Japanese forces and it was then liberated by the American Forces on May 29, 1945. Bacolod is a major seaport and it is said to have daily trips to Iloilo City.
It serves as the gateway to the sugar-rich cities and towns of Negros. People in Bacolod engage in livestock, fishing and pottery. The city had received an award from ANVIL because of its implementation of laws which can speed up processing of business applications and payments of taxes.
