Formerly called as Chardzhou, Turkmenabat is a simple town in Turkmenistan and is the capital of the Lebap Province. It has about 203,000 inhabitants as of 1999.
It is situated 187 meters on the banks of the Amu-Darya River which is near the border with Uzbekistan. It is currently a modern industrial city and it has a history of over 2,000 years. Turkmenabat was founded in 1886 in the construction of the Trans-Caspian railway. It is the major trade center for agricultural products in the northeast region of the country and it also has food processing and textile factories.
During the ancient times, Turkmenabat was called Amul and the great Amu Darya was named after it. In the Soviet period, Charjew served as the country’s industrial and transport hub. It is connected with the Turkmen capital Ashbagat by the Turkmenistan airlines and also by train to Nukus and Urgench which are all found in Uzbekistan.
