Welcome to Mindanao, the second largest as well as the easternmost island in the Philippines. It is named after the Maguindanaons who were the first inhabitants of the island. The island was formerly called as Gram Molucas of Great Mollucas.
The island is the home of the Muslim or Moro populations in the country and it is made op numerous ethnic groups like the Maranao and the Tausug, Banguingui and the collective group of tribes called the Lumad. However, due to an influx of migration and evangelization, majority of the island’s population is now predominantly Christians.
Mount Apo is found in Mindanao and it is regarded as the highest mountain in the country. The island is also surrounded by seas such as the Sulu Sea, Philippine Sea and the Celebes Sea. Mindanao is divided into six regions and these regions are then subdivided into 25 provinces. Its major islands include Basilan, Jolo and Tawi-Tawi.
