Known as the capital city of the Northern Province, Sri Lanka, Jaffna had been the second largest city in Sri Lanka for several decades until the very recent civil conflict.
Among the main products of the city are sea products, red onion and tobacco. Just before the civil war, Jaffna was a place of many small scale industries that manufacture household items and packaging and food processing for their export. The city is currently facing setbacks due to unstable connectivity with the south. The city’s primary economic activity is related to trading. Most of the people in Jaffna befor the civil war were Tamil speaking. It is said that there were about 800,000 Tamils, 14,000 Moors and 5,000 Sinhala people who had lived in the city.
The Hindus in Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts comprised 85% of the total population in the areas. Jaffna Tamils belonged to the Dravidian cultural group. It was in the colonial period when the people in Jaffna were attracted to the western culture.
