Known as a long established harvest festival in Punjab, Vaisakhi is said to have a religious significance to Sikhs and also to Hindus. The celebration falls on the first day of Vaisakh month in the solar Nanakshahi calendar which is April 13 in Gregorian calendar.

The festival is celebrated to commemorate Khalsa- the establishment of the religion in 1699. It was the tenth Guru of the Sikhs named Guru Gobind Singh who had founded the Khalsa at the Vaisakhi gathering. The Guru had arranged for flowers from all over India to meet him at Vasakhi Fair held in Anandpur. The celebration is important for the Sikhs for it serves as the founding of the Akal Khlasa or the Soldiers of the Timeless One at Anandpur Sahib.

The festivities start early as devotees with flower and offerings in their hands go towards the gurdwaras and temples before dawn. There are processions done in towns.
