Serves as the capital and largest city of Timor Leste, DIli lies on the northern coast of Timor island. It is the chief port as well as the commercial center for East Timor. Dili has a total population of 150,000.

Dili

It was in the year 1520 when the Portuguese had settled in the city and they are the ones who made the capital of Portuguese Timor in the year 1769. When East Timor was placed under the supervision of the United Nations on May 20, 2002, Dili was then considered as the capital of the independent Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

The buildings and monuments in the city were unfortunately destroyed in the violence of 1999 which was orchestrated by the Indonesian military and the local pro-Indonesia militias. Today, there are still many buildings in the city which were built during the Portuguese era. The office of the Prime Minister today was the former Portuguese Governor’s office.
